Discovery is a funny thing. If everybody else already knows about something, how can you tell? I guess you  can keep it to yourself or risk a horselaugh when you tell about it. Columbus was thought to discover America, but the "Indians" had found it long before.

A guy chops a sloppy  hole into, say, sheet metal and wants to make it round. He can do it with a rat-tail file. Here goes: he loosely pinches the file's end and sets the file nutating while it has been placed through the rough hole. Meanwhile, he alternately thrusts and partially withdraws the conical locus to and fro. Centrifugal force suffices to scrape the aperture into shape quicker than one might think.

You have a new one on me, Dale. Vas ist das "nutating?"

Also... which file end am I to be pinching?

Das is der process of imitating the maneuver of one's forearm if one planted elbow onto table while rotating end of forefinger in a horizontal circle in either one direction of the other. It might be called a conical flopping of the file, for instance, so that the free end would yield to centrifugal force.

Beggy pardon, I forgot that files are meant to have handles. All of mine lost their handles at the hands of an ancestor. Pinch the pointy end that would go into a handle if it had one.

Like a pendulum?

Less like the two-dimensional reciprocation of a pendulum than a three-dimensional rotational travel enscribing a cone.

I had to delete your thread to be fair to our board rules. If this is from a member please let me know.

And I hated to delete without reference the above post. I would have responded with "the pendulum sweeping a generatrix in periodic motion." or something to describe an imaginary time space geometry of a topographically 2D cone.

I see, Dale, what you are showing us. A friend and i were discussing Nutate and found it a great vocabulary builder. As some words like "ways" are acquired through a specialty trade. I can see how that would work. Its interesting to suspend a weight on a string and scribe the motion at the base. You could potentially think the nutation. The axis of the resultant of the radial force from the finger to the tip of the rat-tail file, rather than the handle, rolls around our touch to provide the path for a cycloid. The circle base of the cone.
